Painted around 1903, this watercolor offers a poetic view of a rural landscape where rain becomes a subject of contemplation, revealing the artist's sensitivity to atmospheric atmospheres. Louis Étienne Dauphin, born in Paris in 1885 and died prematurely in 1926, was appointed official painter of the Navy in 1912, succeeding his father, Eugène Battistin Émile Marie Dauphin (1857-1930), himself a renowned painter.
On board the ships of the French Navy, Louis Dauphin travelled the Mediterranean - Greece, Italy, Spain, but also Provence and the north of France - immortalizing in his notebooks the ports, coasts and villages he passed through.
During the First World War, Dauphin was mobilized and became a privileged witness to the front. In 1919, he exhibited his works at the special exhibition of mobilized artists, and in 1920, he presented sketches made in Corfu, Athens and Venice at the Salon de la National, precious traces of his campaigns in the Orient and Italy. This watercolor, with its refined technique and its accuracy of atmosphere, reflects the soul of an artist between naturalist sensibility and historical memory. The painter's eye captures both the beauty of everyday life and the fragility of the moment.
